DEALING WITH REFLUX – GERD AND HIATUS HERNIA
THE MOST TROUBLESOME AND COMMON ISSUE
GERD is a leading gastro-intestinal structural abnormality which effects millions of people world wide.
What happens during a meal
When we swallow, a circular band of muscle around the lower part of the food pipe namely esophageal valve relaxes to allow the food either solids or liquids to enter the stomach.
If there is a defect (or) laxity in the sphincter mechanism, the contents and the acid in the stomach is pushed back due to pressure gradient into the food pipe causing a "Backlash" effect there by leading to burning sensation.
This can happen if some one is overweight, over eating, consuming excess caffeinated beverages, excess alcohol intake, chocolates, spicy foods and irregular meal pattern.
